Flu Shot Info

Home Bound Healthcare offers flu shots in your home as of Sept. 1

Home Bound Healthcare of Flossmoor will provide flu and pneumonia vaccines to people in the comfort of their homes, or to those that visit the office, as of September 1, 2011.

The Center for Disease Control recommends getting the vaccine as soon as it becomes available in the community, because it takes the body about two weeks to build up immunity.  The immunity will last throughout the entire flu season.

Anyone over the age of 65 or under the age of 65 with a disability that makes it difficult for them to leave home is eligible to receive the flu shot in their home.

Home Bound Healthcare will offer this service at no out-of-pocket expense for those with Medicare coverage. The cost of the flu vaccine for those without Medicare coverage will be $25.00.

“The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.  It is especially important that those considered a high-risk for developing serious flu-related complications be vaccinated, as well as those that care for high-risk individuals,” said Brian Weinstein, APN, NP-C, RN, MS, the Chief Nurse Practitioner for Home Bound Healthcare. “The groups most at risk for developing complications related to the flu are children, adults over 65, and pregnant women.  In addition, people with the following medical conditions are considered high-risk:  asthma, heart disease, blood disorders, diabetes, kidney disorders, liver disorders, COPD, and weakened immune system.”

This is the seventh year they have provided flu shots via house call, and the response in past years has been very positive.  “The response has been great from those who were aware of this service. Several people said it was a tremendous help to them because they have transportation issues or health problems that make it difficult — if not impossible — for them to leave home or go out in to the community and stand in line at one of the flu clinics,” he said.  “The in-home flu shot service will ensure those that have trouble getting around will be provided with the protection they need.”

Home Bound Healthcare decided to add flu shots and pneumonia shots to their repertoire of home health services because they are committed to providing the highest quality of care to people in the convenience of their homes. “We believe in going above and beyond in customer service.  Community members can schedule a time to receive the vaccination at their convenience.  We want to make sure that the needs of all people are being met,” Weinstein explained.

If you don’t fit the qualifications for receiving the flu shot at home but still want to get it, Home Bound will also be providing the vaccine in their office after September 1. They are located in Flossmoor at 1615 Vollmer Road.  They are also available to schedule flu shot clinics at community buildings, senior housing facilities, and with other organizations.
